As the Liverpool-born and London-residing Andrew Deevy reveals, cash can buy many things. But when the pay is so low, it feels like you’re barely grasping straws to fully live. “Money Can’t Buy Me Love” is a solid track from the former Hellfire Sermons member, who shows why even the necessities are hard to come by. We’re all one short paycheck away from being shown the door, and not even selling our souls and bodies for grueling work doesn’t guarantee the roof over our heads! Hopefully, Andrew’s dream of being able to afford things without worry will come true, and we here at Shameless Tuesdays are here to show that you don’t need cold, hard cash to earn some warm, soft love.
Here’s what Andrew Deevey has to say about this week’s playlist:
This Spotify playlist is a playlist of songs that made me what I am as a musician. Everything was E.L.O. or ABBA, and I wasn’t interested in any of it till punk came along, and I discovered the Buzzcocks and very soon after that Echo and the Bunnymen. I had a friend who played a bit of guitar, and within minutes, I could play along to Pictures on My Wall.
We wanted to form a band, but it didn’t get off the ground, but I kept practicing. After a short break, I ended up in The Liverpool Band, The Decemberists, who morphed into the Hellfire Sermons. We were contemporaries of The La’s and The Room, both great guitar bands. The theme of this playlist is that all the bands are guitar bands with some very strong melodic guitar playing.
I moved to London and joined the Caretaker Race, who were signed to Stephen Street’s Foundation Label. The songs were guitar-driven and sounded like The Smiths in places. Not surprising, as everyone was listening, as Robert Forster said in the 80s, “It was The REM, The Smiths, and The Go-Betweens.”
The Bitter Springs needed a guitarist and asked me to record some songs in the studio, the first being Your Leather Boots. The studio engineer wanted a one-note guitar solo, but I decided I could do better than that and came up with my best Britpop impersonation. With The Bitter Springs being Vic Godard’s backing band on tour, I got to play my favourite Vic Godard song, Johnny Thunders.
