Julia Greenberg is a woman who’s worn many musical hats in her life. From directing a documentary about Oscar-nominated songwriter Dory Previn to composing a musical with the co-writer of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, one could easily say she’s accomplished a lot. But now, Greenberg returns to the microphone for her own music. Her newest EP, Born Sentimental, is a reflection of lost time, renewed friendship, and the power a song can bring. This is very evident in such tracks as “Leaves” and “Sometimes the Sea”, which capture lyrics filled with grief, hope, and cherished memories. To keep the sentiment going, Julia Greenberg has crafted a Shameless Tuesdays playlist filled with the people who’ve made her the songwriter she is today.

From Abbey Lincoln to SG Goodman, from Dory Previn to Aldous Harding, from Randy Newman to Valerie June, these are the songwriters that keep me keeping on. The indispensable ingredients of any song that inspires me to write my own are the soul, the craft, and the funny. Maybe it’s not a song to make you laugh out loud, but there’s got to be a line in there, where you can imagine the songwriter quietly shaking their heads and chuckling to themselves–even if it’s just in that moment of figuring out the rhyme. I added a couple of my own here–ones that are particularly inspired by the people on this list.
