Bravo, Let’s Do It Already! Simply bravo. From the start of this rom-com, I had no idea the kind of game you were going to play. You started out with two idiots who were madly in love with one another, but had a family patriarchy lingering over their heads with every move they attempted to make. But as the story went on, you began to show the smarts of both Yuri and Keiichiro. Let’s Do It Already! was never about following a family’s orders; it was about how these two could find ways to defy them.

Honestly, it didn’t start to click until Volume Eight, where Keiichiro goes so far as to run away from home and move into a rusty apartment with Yuri. This was a guy who was held prisoner by the rules that hung over his head every waking second. And it took Yuri, the love of his life, to help him break away from the shackles that his grandfather placed on him. The question now is, why does the family care so much about these rules, and why torture a teen with such an asinine situation?

Thankfully, the ninth and final volume of Let’s Do It Already! answers that question. It’s a standoff between a grandfather and the loving couple. An ultimatum is laid out: break up with Yuri, or be disowned by the family. With its trademark humor, the pros and cons of both are laid out, as a decision is made. Tears are shed, hugs are given, and even an old man who’s too stuck on tradition finds a way to loosen up a bit.

So why the rules in the first place? Call it a means of making sure that what you want in life is really what you want. Yuri and Keiichiro’s grandfather have a surprisingly good chat about it, as the old man reveals the story behind his daughter, Keiichiro’s mother. The tale is very similar to that of Keiichiro and Yuri’s only this one ends in tragedy. At that point, you get it. You may still disagree with how the family has treated Keiichiro, but you get it.

What I didn’t expect from Let’s Do It Already! was the actual “do it” part! All this time, I thought it was a clever way to take a naughty sentence and frame it to mean having a relationship as a whole. But New Year’s Eve comes around, and just mere hours before Keiichiro turns 18, he and Yuri…do it. The lead-up, the moment, and the aftermath are a beautiful scene that’s sandwiched by hilarious worries and a post-cum clarity that’s too funny to spoil here.

Where do Yuri and Keiichiro go from here? The end clearly shows what they plan to do next, and after everything these two went through, how can anyone think that the decision feels rushed? By the final pages, it’s clear that these two earned everything that their hearts have desired since the beginning. No matter how dumb they were at the beginning, Yuri and Keiichiro have certainly smartened up and have properly thought of what they wish to do for the rest of their lives.

For a rom-com with such a wacky premise, Let’s Do It Already! certainly led us down a path towards a straightforward conclusion. The finale wraps everything up nicely, with nary a plot hole to be found. It’s clear that not every day in Keiichiro and Yuri’s lives will be filled with happiness. However, so long as they have each other, they will sail upon any harrowing sea to get through the rough waves towards their island paradise.

Here’s to love, and for Let’s Do It Already! to show its readers how a true romantic would take on any challenge that’s laid down in front of them.
