When The Way of the Househusband shows off its massive ensemble, that’s when it’s firing on all cylinders. Tatsu may be the main guy, but even the brightest star needs a good support crew. As the fifteenth volume of The Way of the Househusband shows, Tatsu’s got a solid gang waiting in the wings to bring the laughs.
The volume begins on a high note with a familiar face in need of help with his food truck. Tatsu comes up with the wild idea to wear mascot suits, a concept that seems cute at first. However, knowing this manga, the Immortal Dragon will find a way to transform something cute into something truly disturbing. And when it happens, the sight will no doubt bring laughter to many readers’ faces!
Any story involving the young girl An has The Way of the Househusband reaching peak comedic heights. The cute girl turns vicious in a flash, be it when it comes to digging clams or attempting to score exclusive magical girl merch. Add on a young boy, who also has some nefarious ties, and you have yourself a showdown between two cute characters doing the least cutest of things. These are situations that not even Tatsu is prepared to take on, making the scenarios even funnier.
However, Tatsu is the star, and the star finds many ways to bring comedy on his own. Many of the best situations involve seeking “products”, normal foods and items that Tatsu talks about as if they’re top-tier drugs. One scenario has him aiding a woman trying to find cabbage, with his vernacular infecting her by day’s end. Then there’s the quest for the best pickles of Japan, with his keen tongue and sense of smell assisting him on the journey. Both of these tales show off just how intense Tatsu can be, even when he’s simply shopping for tasty veggies.
Perhaps the funniest chapter involves Tatsu and his former yakuza comrades having a cherry blossom viewing party. Not only are they having a good time, but spirits of yakuza past are there watching closely by. But things get tense when other spirits arrive to join in, resulting in the funniest ghostly beatdown since four paranormal investigators took down a giant marshmallow man. When this series wants to be silly, it embraces it with a super tight hug!
Kousuke Oono has a knack for making a good ensemble. Volume Fifteen of The Way of the Househusband showcases every funny bone these characters have. While some may see the punchline coming a mile away, how it gets there will still make the average manga reader laugh heartily. If not, then they’re in for a real pickle of an awkward situation.
