When it comes to the best first manga to show to young kids, there’s no better choice than Konami Kanata’s Chi’s Sweet Home. The tale of the cute kitten and her life in Japan is simple, sweet, and — above all — entertaining for kids and adults of all ages. Although it had an equally good spin-off — Chi’s Sweet Adventures — Kanata never showed what happened after the Yamada family left for France. Thankfully, Chi’s Sweet France shows exactly what occurred when the American Shorthair and her family made the big leap overseas.

First thing’s first: Chi’s Sweet France isn’t a big read. In fact, its 55 pages make for what’s normally one-fourth of a normal manga volume. Be that as it may, this series is geared towards preschoolers and kindergarten kids, so this size should fit perfectly in the hands of readers that, well, are tiny. Readers should also consider Chi’s Sweet France an epilogue to Chi’s Sweet Home, as it appears to be a one-off continuation for the time being.

However, that doesn’t mean that Chi’s Sweet France isn’t lacking in the cuteness and entertainment value that we’ve come to expect from the Chi franchise. The six chapters that are featured in this collection have exactly what fans of the original series will enjoy. Curious as ever, Chi finds herself wondering what’s in her new living area. Lovely parks, new streets, and maybe even a new friend here and there to make the move less lonely.

Most impressive is how the art emulates Kanata’s original style. Although she was in charge of the story, the visual aspect of Chi’s Sweet France was handled by French artist Catherine Bouvier. But even in the hands of a new artist, Chi, the Yamadas, and the French surroundings look just as lovely as they did in the main series. If young kids won’t be jarred by another artist taking over for Chi, then older readers won’t have an issue either.

Chi’s Sweet France is a good end to the American Shorthair’s story. With that being said, it’s hard to actually call it an “end” though, as even its conclusion makes it feel like new adventures are on the horizon for Chi. Maybe one day, we’ll see what other fun and heartwarming things Chi and the Yamadas will be up to. For now, Chi’s Sweet France is a lovely, albeit short, return of the cutest cat to ever come out of Japan.
