Do you remember in the first Back to the Future movie, where if Marty McFly didn’t get his parents together, he would disappear? Volume Twenty-Four of Undead Unluck is basically that, only with Fuuko taking on the role Michael J. Fox made famous. Okay, it’s not a 1:1 remake of one of the greatest movies of the 1980s, but the premise is pretty much the same. And like Back to the Future, the whole meet-up between Fuuko’s future parents requires a big stage and many eyes to see it.

No, we don’t see Fuuko whip out a guitar and play “Johnny B. Goode”, although that would be awesome. Instead, it’s Fuuko’s mom, Kaede, who needs to melt the heart of the future papa, Raita. Kaede is an idol with a unique voice, and she aims to be at the top of the music world. However, because of the “unique” way she sings, her crowd size is pretty darn small. But that doesn’t keep Raita from admiring her skills.

Thus, a plan is set in motion. If Fuuko can get Raita to watch Kaede perform at a music festival competition, then Fuuko won’t have to worry about disappearing. There’s just one person standing in the way: Kururu, the one with Unchaste. At first, Fuuko thought that having Union members with a wife/girlfriend to assist with the plan would make it foolproof. But Kururu is a lot more evolved here than her previous self.

As such, it’s up to Kaede and her own skills to woo Raita, who at first is hesitant to watch her perform in fear of keeping her from her dreams. While she blows most of the competition away, it’s when Kaede goes face to face with Kururu when it transforms into a fight for a man’s heart. Kaede battles onward to woo Raita; Kururu is doing it to erase Fuuko. And when they fight, it’s like watching HANABIE. go head-to-head with Nemophila.

It’s after this where we see Fuuko give a heartfelt speech to the Union members. Memories of the past flood Fuuko’s heart and mind, a past these current versions of the Union members still have no recollection of. But when the time is right, those memories will one day pop into their brains, as they are shown an era where some of the current allies were the bitterest of rivals. The question is, will awakening these memories cause those antagonistic feelings to return?

There’s no time left to wonder about this what-if scenario. As the twenty-fourth volume of Undead Unluck closes, Fuuko meets the remaining member left unchecked by her: Tatiana. For now, the Untouchable negator is living an okay life, albeit one that has her in the public eye thanks to her modeling career. But will that change once Fuuko brings her into the Union fold? Can she keep the promise she made to Tatiana in the past?

Whatever the case may be, the Union is very close to reaching their goal. Volume Twenty-Four of Undead Unluck nearly completes the set to defeat God and the Ten Superior Rules. And for a moment, Fuuko got to see her parents smile, something that she never thought she’d ever bear witness to again. If Undead Unluck keeps it up, then there’s a good chance it’ll end its story on a very high, very positive note. And that’s something that I truly hope comes to pass!
