With all of the chaos in the world right now, it feels like everyone’s in need of a lo-fi moment to chill. Portland’s Wooden Overcoat have the remedy to give us just that, in the form of their debut EP Hello Sunbeam (in stores May 29th). The first half of the record drifts listeners into the calm via “Home” and “Finally Arrived”, as multi-instrumentalist Brant Hajek whittles a musical canoe ride down a comfy riverside. And its destination just so happens to be this week’s Shameless Tuesdays.

Lying on a couch in your living room, there’s a transistor radio playing songs hazy and lush with reverb. Like in a David Lynch film, something feels off but there’s no discernible reason why. The ballads, recorded directly onto tape machines, are soft and somber with a dreamlike quality. Some of them sound joyful on the surface, but there’s an uneasiness about them you can’t quite put your finger on, as though they were transmitted from an alternate dimension where another species tried its best to approximate human happiness.

Each of these songs means a lot to me. They’re all tied to specific memories, different periods of my life, and the moments when I first heard them. They were formative for me, but together they also create something that feels unified: sorrow, loneliness, heartbreak, and longing drifting through the sounds of mid-century American pop, country, and folk music.
