When a manga has two main leads confessing their feelings for one another, that’s usually a sign that a series is winding down. But in the case of Colette Decides to Die, a love confession is but a slice of what the series has been rolling towards. Yes, Colette and Hades finally being true to their feelings is a huge deal, but in a world of Greek gods and a plethora of mischief, that only concludes one of many story arcs that have been featured throughout the series. In fact, as the seventh volume of Colette Decides to Die shows, it only makes room for the biggest god of them all to finally make their presence known.
However, before they appear, it totally is about Colette and Hades finally becoming a couple. And no group of people is more excited about it than our favorite skeletons. Some are joyful, others are irked that their beloved Hades is no longer single. One of those skeletons that is still riled about Colette is the chef, who does bond with the titular character after making some honey cookies. Nevertheless, even when he’s finally warmed up to Colette, he doesn’t hide the fact that her presence still irks him.
Most of the first half of the seventh volume focuses on some fun side stories. From wine making to a fancy drinking party with some goddesses, these tales don’t add too much sustenance to the main story. However, they do show some new sides of these well-known Greek mythological characters. The silliest of stories involves Ares challenging Athena to a duel, as it pits both deities of war in battles that use the power of luck.
But then, in the second half of Colette Decides to Die, the biggest god of them all makes his grand entrance: Cronus! The father of many famous gods — Hades included — appears in a manner that will take many readers by surprise. But even in his current form, Cronus is a nonce, demanding all the respect in the world without giving an ounce in return. That is, until he hears and sees all the things Hades has to do to run a tight ship in the underworld, leading towards a semi-sweet moment between father and son.
Yet even the tightest-run ships will still have problems. A judgment session results in the all-seeing mirror to be cracked. As the process of fixing it is next-to-impossible, it’s up to Zeus to help make a brand-new one. But even a new one isn’t a guarantee, leading to Hades to realize that his job may get a thousand times harder if the mirror cannot be made. Thankfully, even with such a situation hanging over his head, Zeus goes to great lengths to show the kind of composure he has for any situation that may fall on his lap.
For the most part, the titular character of Colette Decides to Die plays second fiddle to the narrative. Be that as it may, she does play some importance to the stories, be it how she cares for Cronus or aiding in a battle between two gods of war. Lest we forget, she’s also the shoulder for Hades to rest on after a long day of work, a role that’s given her a bit of extra fun in the bedroom. (Well, possibly, as Alto Yukimura teases in a bonus chapter at the end.)
Even with a big storyline coming to a conclusion, the seventh volume of Colette Decides to Die shows that there are still more tales to tell. And thus far, what readers have been given is still pretty enjoyable. Anything involving Greek gods acting drunk, petty, or both at the same time is bound to be entertaining. On top of that, the stakes of how the underworld will be run in the future add a bit of tension to an already work-worn Hades. Hopefully, as the story continues, we’ll see Colette become a sturdier rock for the god that judges every recently-deceased soul.
